using the internet to download music
.
this is unpoliced in usa, so there isn't any way as of the day i last updated this page, that you will get in trouble for the mere act of downloading from youtube. technically it's wrong to steal someone else's work, but i have a problem with people patenting or copyrighting something where anything made before or after remotely like it for the next 70+ years will give them money and the right to sue. i think 6 months for most things is a good solution to fixing the copyright/patent law, but nobody is going to listen to me except maybe the people reading this website.

use youtube to find a song you want
.
copy the URL (thing at the top which starts with http or www) and paste it into freeyoutube downloader http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-YouTube-Download.htm#.VGUkoNCNFxA . sometimes freeyoutubedownload doesn't work for whatever reason. you can alternatively use freemake video converter to download from youtube, but freemake won't work for every video, so you will have to try different videos until you get one which works. http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/ . remember these programs require frequent updates to continue to be able to download from youtube, so if there is an update available, you should update.
.
i think this can download playlists, instead of downloading videos one at a time from youtube.

mp3 player (not ipod)
.
if you are using an mp3 player (also called a media player device) i suggest convert the music to mp3 before copying to your music player. people think mp3 format is limited in quality. mp3 has no more limitations than other formats except that mp3 is copyrighted in the usa (usa doesn't police remote digital copyright infrigement of audio at this time). mp3 is the most compatible audio file format, and one of the smallest formats sizewise. all media players can read mp3 encoded in normal audio codecs. every non apple mp3 player i've ever seen does not matter where you put the mp3s meaning which folder. mp3 players function exactly like flash drives with the exception that you can use them to play music on the device instead of hooking them up to a computer or another device. mp3 players are a standalone device. you can use mp3 players as a flash drive. it will function the same as flash memory (non mass storage). when the mp3 player turns on every time, it searches for all music and organizes the music, so it takes a few more seconds to "boot up" than phones, tablets, and ipods.

ipods are mp3 players. they have an additional encryption you don't see on other mp3 players. these are all apple devices using an apple operating system. you want to use itunes if you are using windows, and gtkpod if you are using linux. itunes splits the music into many parts with strange folders and file extensions, so you have to use software which does exactly that, because doing something like that manually would take forever. again this is for apple devices only. for normal media players you don't have to do anything special with the .mp3 files.

putting music on an audio cd or taking music off of an audio cd anchor link
.
'windows media player' (installed with windows) is able to handle all your ripping (taking music off) and burning (putting music on) needs.
.
you need a cd burner to put music on a BLANK CD. most cd roms (roms can play music cds) nowadays are also burners (burners put data on cds). older roms did not have the ability to burn. a burner or a non burning cd rom will work to take music off of a cd (a standalone "cd player" will not work unless you hook it up to a computer, and it's not going to be a perfect copy if you do that anyway. you don't want to connect a cd player to a computer to copy unless you cannot do it on the same computer. a cd burner will usually show something like "cd+-rw" on the outside of the rom to tell you it can burn (older roms will have "cd-rom" or "dvd-rom"). every dvd and bluray BURNER also will burn cds. this makes things more cofusing because there are burners which will play and burn cds but only play dvds.
.
you can buy blank cds from walmart or from amazon.com. purchase blank cd-r cds and make sure not to touch the bottom of the cd before or after you put music on. (the cd-r will play on standalone cd players, but the cd+r will not). you should be able to download and install windows media player if you don't have it for some reason and you are using windows. in 2000 windows media player began supporting burning and ripping, so any windows media player version after 2000 will burn.
.
if you don't like windows media player, i think these are the best free programs to burn audio cds

there is other good free software, but there is also a lot of free software which does not work well

to modify audio (edit audio) anchor link
.
so you want to make a song louder or remove the last 20 seconds of the song. this is how you do things like that. audacity is so good, you will never need other software to edit audio. audacity is by far the best free version for editing audio. it's also pretty easy to
.
use audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
.
if you want to be able to modify mp3s you need the non free plugins with audacity and they HAVE TO BE THE SAME VERSION PLUGINS or it will not work. i'm not going to take the time to explain how to find the plugins and install them. you can search on forums and webpages how to do this. the audacity wiki or wikia probably are the best instructions.
.
audacity and freemake can pull the audio out of a video (everything on youtube is in video format, even things with black video). audacity will do everything you want with audio. freemake will only do a few things to edit audio (freemake cannot cut part of a song out for example)
