Copyright Law

essentially what microsoft did with windows xp and windows vista was made versions which have unlimited installs and poor copyright protection which should only ever have been allowed to be installed on 1 computer, but alas you can install vista and xp unlimited times without any real trace of it being installed before (unless you know where to look exactly). Windows 7 fixed this problem by forcing pop up windows if you use a “cracked” version. Xp allows half of the versions to be reinstalled infinitely, but xp stopped allowing windows update, so unless you have all the updates, (at least 20) saved in redistributable format (which i do), you are left with only windows vista being the only os you can reinstall for free of windows.. The version of vista is not a cracked version. It's called OEM and computers were and are sold still with oem vista. The only way you can tell if you have an oem version is by going to your computer properties from your start menu for example. It will read that you have “windows vista 64bit OEM” for example. I think google has a free os which would be the best free alternative for windows 8 atm. Google chrome os is even more linuxy than macintosh was (both run on the linux kernel)

anyway enough of the history lesson. So to summarize, microsoft went directly against the copyright law and released a version of windows vista which would never be legal to install anyway, so you wonder why would they release it? They released it for big businesses so big businesses would be able to reinstall windows vista without entering a cd key. They didn't think giving out millions of copies to big businesses, someone would copy a cd and take it home and load it on their home computer without any trace of it being copied. After this happened thousands of times about 1 year after microsoft said 'whoops we made a mistake” and made it illegal to share it publically, but you can still give it out privately. The only real way you could get in trouble is if you talked directly to a judge, police officer, or had your computer seized or searched by the police, would you get in trouble for having an illigetimate version of windows, which would be hard to prove you got it illegally seeing how i've seen it sold with computers from businesses.

i hope this helps people who i've done tech support for in the past who have asked me the question about if it's legal to install windows, where other computer professionals don't tell you the truth and they load it on and you believe they aren't breaking the law doing what they are doing. Knowledge is power, and not all laws are good. Apparently not all laws are followed by the people who invented the laws either. I'm sure microsoft had input on that copyright amendment in 1996 if not outlined the entire amendment themselves. The copyright law as a whole should be rethought if there is freedom of data transfer around the world. Those 2 things do not work together.
