. Alternative to high cost mainstream phones, television, and movies
. last updated 082619 . . phone . this type of phone is better in every way than the mainstream phones and can do everything the main phones can do with the exception of calling an emergency number from a computer (you can call 911 from phones and tablets) the downside is this is a little more difficult to set up, but i'd take "a little more difficult" for half the cost or free. this is probably worth your time unless you are made of money and don't mind paying $50-$100 a month PER PHONE. you may have to change your phone number and you probably would lose your contacts and messages if you had to change phones or carriers. with this system you would avoid all of that headache for a little extra headache initially. i also like being able to choose my own phone number. it doesn't sound like much, but it's cool to be able to have my number spell something out. . if you know this is what you want you may skip down to the next section "instructions" below . as of september 2014 google has finally completed a free telephone all by itself minus internet connectivity (which is a hardware thing). this works 100% for free if you have an internet connection. . for an internet connection i suggest something like AT&T mobile hotspot device (about the size of a cell phone) for $50 a month unless you use a single device or only use the internet very occasionally. also i use tmobile currently as my phone internet which is about $50 a month for 4gb no contract bandwidth on my phone. this is one of the better deals, just need to buy a used or refurbished phone preferrably from a cheap place like amazon.com. "locked" means locked to a single isp or phone provider. sometimes there is an issue of relocking a phone which has been unlocked, so you should ask the company before you get or use any phone if they will lock a particular type of mobile device. you should ask your phone provider if they are able to use a new device you are purchasing if you aren't purchasing it from them if you can use it with their plan. most year plus long contracts are a thing of the past unless you buy a new phone. . you can probably get more basic internet for $30-$40 a month if you just want to check email, texts, and occasionally make calls or use a search engine (like google or dogpile). . you may run into a minor problem or not have to do a step below because i read the phone carriers are fighting trying to keep people paying for these high phone plans. essentially this is the phone of the future. i tell people it's like email was in the 1990s. this is the webmail version of a phone, and eventualy all phones will be using this type of system. the good thing about using a google account is you have the liberty to change carriers and use any device (even possible to use non smart phones with google albeit 4-5 minutes just to place a single phone call), but it's well worth the effort if you get this to work and aren't made of money. everyone who uses this i hear is very glad they started using it. it rivals the most expensive phone plans with the added benefit of not being connected to any device or computer. i heard someone make the argument against this ty pe of phone recently you can just transfer your phone number with paid plans if you lose or break your phone or change carriers. yes this is "usually" true but there is at least a 20% chance you will lose your number, and an almost certain change your contacts will not transfer (what company wants to make it easy to stop paying them by letting you export your contacts and messages? it was like pulling teeth when i simply had to switch phone carriers recently), and if your phone number doesn't transfer you have to tell everyone the new number. it's better to keep your contacts on a piece of paper or on a file on a seperate device or computer. when i lost my phone recently and when i told people they most commonly replied "oh dam, do you have a new number?". i just answered i am out the money i paid for my last phone and i didn't lose anything. 1 week later my new phone is up and running and i'll just be more careful not to lose this phone now. i used my computer as my phone the week i was waiting for my new phone to arrive. . you don't encounter network busy messages using the "data" line on phones and tablets, or using the internet on a computer. the downside is sometimes internet can lag or be slow. i guess it's a tradeoff, but i'd rather have a slow internet than no internet due to network busy. also i've noticed the same places which have data service also have phone network service and visa versa, so it's really just a question if you want to use the phone network or the data network to make calls if you are using a tablet or a cell phone. with a computer you only get the data part unless you have something special attached to your computer which allows you to function over the phone network. . there are half a dozen "networks" of computers and devices i know about. there are probably more i don't know about. it's just a collection of mostly computerlike things and routers which make up these networks. the ones i know about are "phone/text", "internet", "dark web", "military", "cable tv/dish tv", "sattelite phone network". i'm only referring to the phone/text and the internet networks here. . instructions for a free phone anchor link . if all you want to do is use a computer or locked or unlocked device as a free phone this is how... . sign up for a google email (same as a google account) or make sure you have you can get into your google email (google account). create a new google account here if you do not have one. https://accounts.google.com . obviously make sure you can log into it. . if you are using a phone or tablet you have a few additional steps. the only possible additional step using a computer is to make sure you have the caller application whatever it is. it might be google dialer or google hangouts. it tends to keep changing, and usually when you try to make a call it will tell you what you need to install using a computer. . so when using an android phone or tablet you want to make sure you set up "google voice", "google hangouts" and "hangouts dialer". you make calls using the "hangouts" or "hangouts dialer" application (app), and you send messages with the google voice or hangouts application. (you "can" use the default phone application if you are paying a phone carrier like tmobile, or verizonwireless, otherwise you need to use google hangouts and google voice application). i believe every phone or tablet "has" a phone number, so you need to know that number to give it to google voice and google hangouts. if your phone is hiding its phone number from you, try calling another phone which has caller id using google voice or some other application until you figure out your phone's number. after you give that number to hangouts, you can use your google caller id instead of your phone's caller id when making calls. again this is not neccessary if you are paying a monthly fee for your phone. the android operating system will ask you if you want to use your google voice to make calls, and you want to select that you want to use google voice to make calls unless you don't want to use your google account to make calls, which in that case i don't know why you are reading this far down this page if you aren't going to use it anyway. . when using any computer (windows, macintosh, linux) you just need to make sure the correct calling application is installed (it will prompt you and tell you what you need installed wh en you attempt this), use YOUR GOOGLE EMAIL webpage to make calls. when you log into your GOOGLE EMAIL and you see your INBOX with all your EMAIL MESSAGES, on the left sidebar at the bottom you will see "make a call". this will actually only appear if you have some type of speakers and microphone on your computer. it will simply not show up until you have a microphone and speakers or headphones attached. your web browser uses the default microphone and speaker, so make sure especially in windows 8 and windows 10 the default device is your microphone and speakers (not the communications device). again because the web browser will detect your default device not your default communications device. you also keep the google email page up to recieve calls. if you don't want to recieve calls then close the google email page. (sometimes it will continue to run in the background which can be disabled in your web browser settings). you use the google voice webpage, google voice application, or hangouts application to send and recieve texts on a computer. you use one of these to listen to voice mails. . that's all the information you need to set up a free phone. again please contact me if you have any questions. this is a great phone and free, but there is nobody you can call if something goes wrong. in fact google does not even have any type of live text or phone support i hear. yes this is extremely inexpensive and convienent once you get it set up, but it's more difficult than paying 2x as much, and if something breaks or changes you have to fix it yourself or figure out why. i do use this phone, so i usually have the solution in less than 1 day if you are relying on this and need to contact me. i also work so it might take me a day or 2 to get back to you, but this method has been the same since 2011, so i don't think it will be changing in the near future, even though this may change in the future. before 2011 i used to use skype in place of google, and a free one way text ability using a website (could not recieve texts), so i've been getting around the high cost of phones for 10 years now, and plan to continue to keep trying to do so. . some extra information . H+ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZedLgAF9aEg&list=PLE6A2F3ACDDA10C28 . youtube documentary or lecture . crash course (college lecture style) https://www.youtube.com/user/crashcourse . chicago council on global affairs (college lecture style on world events) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJiCrXs-s-pZtjBl7T_O1pQ . issac arthur (astrophysics) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZFipeZtQM5CKUjx6grh54g . coldfusion (underreported economic and tech news) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4QZ_LsYcvcq7qOsOhpAX4A . youtube other . foamy (800 videos very raunchy but good humor) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC19RiHSy28vMxg_dC1AI_fA . good free strippers https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJifUrLteK8n1HLbuxEmnjw . possible free movie and tv websites . i haven't tested these. i hear from various places. . . vev.io . http://www.123movies.to . http://www.thedarcomewatch . https://popcorn-time.to/ . http://showboxappdownload.com/ . https://thepiratebay.org/ . http://watchseries.ag/ . http://www.letmewatchthis.ae/ . lowest cost options . let me be extremely clear... when cable televesion gives prices of $100 or $150 or even less than $100 a month, you don't get anything close to the quality you are getting with netflix and the free internet or paid internet tv stations (like buying a premium channel on a smart device). there are no commercials in netflix and most free and paid smart tv channels and you get 95% of all tv shows and movies with just netflix alone. with cable you get about 30% for about double the price, cannot pause or choose what you want to watch (you have to wait for your show to come on) without paying extra for payperview, and even if you record live tv you have to set the recording and hope it doesn't mess up, and you only get 1 or 3 of those at a time. with netflix it saves everything you watch to the second for years, and you can keep 50 in your queue at once. for those of you who don't know netflix, netflix functions a lot like "youtube" as an interface (but better imo). the netflix streaming only has about 25% of all licenses. the netflix dvds have about 95% of the licenses (this doesn't include live sports or reality shows). i watch and listen to news for free with smart tv, but you can purchase news stations for $10-$20 A YEAR if you watch a lot of news or want a specific news station (like good morning america or something). . as of 2017 netflix starts at $10 a month for streaming and another $10 a month for 1 dvd at a time. you can choose more dvds and devices beyond this for $1-$5 each dvd and device per month. you need an internet connection which will run you $50 a month MAXIMUM using a device with internet or a mobile hotspot. if you are paying more than $50 a month for any sort of internet, you are overpaying. you can get the best networks for less than $50 a month unlimited. most data does not count against your bandwith for streaming movies. . the rest of the costs i will not list other than the cheapest smart tv option is a roku box. these start around $50 and turn a normal television into an internet television. you need an internet connection also, but $50 is cheaper than buying a smart tv for $150+, and most smart tvs don't have as many options and channels as roku does. most blurays, game systems, and newer internet capable devices have some internet tv included (netflix, news stations, access to free and extremely low cost channels, hbo, cinemax, etc) . some other alternatives to netflix are redbox, hulu plus, youtube tv, sony tv, and facebook is starting a paid tv service. again most of these do not count against your bandwidth if you are using something like a mobile device with limited bandwidth. . again if you compare prices of some cables and satellite bundles they can get under $100 a month, but those companies don't tell you the comperable price to netflix is more like $300-$400 a month instead of their stripped down version. besides just never seeing a commercial and being able to save everything you have ever watched to the second is worth it (when you record live tv with cable stations you get 1 or 3 at a time and that's if you remember to record it every time and nobody changes your settings if you are recording your shows automatically). netflix will remember everything you watched so if you are watching a tv series you know where you left off. . if you do watch live sports i still suggest going with netflix and smart devices, buy buying espn for $30 a month or some other sports station or even mobile application which lets you watch the games live. you don't need to pay for all of the sports channels in a cable package. you really only need 1 or 2 sports stations for the sports fanatic unless you spend 8 hours every day watching different sports, and even then you usually have to pay over $100 extra just to get all the sports stations the cable or dish have, so you are probably missing some channels still. . movies and tv serieses about computers . These movies are rated 1-3 in computer knowledge given. I am not putting movies that have bs. (3) is you can learn a ton from this movie. The movie is packed with info and so technical usually hard to understand. (2) usually a computer based movie. the whole movie is not full of info but it\B4ll still teach you a lot.
